Vanderventer Shelter

bulletMiles from Damascus: 32.7
bulletLocation: On Iron Mountain between Tenn. 91 and Watauga Dam Road; elevation 3,620 feet.  The shelter is directly on the A.T.  In the Cherokee National Forest, Watauga Ranger District, Big Laurel Branch Wilderness Area.
bulletConstruction:  Three-sided with open front and wooden sleeping platform.   Concrete-block walls and a metal roof.  Built in 1961 by the U.S. Forest Service.
bulletSleeps: six
bulletMaintenance history:
bullet1990: New rafters were installed to support a new roof.  Heavy duty corrugated galvanized steel was used for the roof.  Both sides were painted with rusty metal primer and the underside was painted white.  Gutters were installed on the front.
bullet1992: Shelter was painted brown on the outside and a tan on the inside.
bulletFuture: Because of wilderness area, TEHCC may modify shelter to cover concrete block.
bulletWater source:  South on A.T. for 300 feet, then turn right on blue-blazed trail, and descend steeply to right on old road track 0.2 mile to saddle.  Bear right off road track 0.3 mile into hollow, and reach spring.
