Kingsport Fun Fest Moonlight Hike Bays Mountain Park, Thursday, July 19, 2007
Steve Falling reporting
This year, Tennessee Eastman Hiking Club is again co-sponsoring the Moonlight Hike at Bays Mountain Park. This popular Fun Fest event attracts 300-500 participants who hike the 2.5 miles around the lake. We are seeking at least twelve volunteers to help count the hikers and keep them on the main trail. Volunteers will need to be at the Bays Mountain Park dam by 7:30 pm to receive instructions. The hike begins at 8:00 and finishes about 10:00 pm. Volunteers should bring a flashlight, good walking shoes or boots, and raingear if rain is a possibility. The volunteer who
comes closest to guessing the number of hikers will win a free gift from the Bays Mountain Park gift shop. Please contact Steve Falling (423-239-5502) to sign up to help or for more information.
TEHCC Rental Equipment: HR-1 thru 3 – Kelty Pack Raincovers
Submitted by Vic Hasler, Rental Equipment Coordinator,
A basic understanding about low-weight backpacking is that a tent is only for sleeping and protection from the elements. The backpack itself is stashed in a vestibule or outside under a tarp. A larger and heavier tent is therefore not required to have inside space for all of the gear.
Another alternative is to protect the pack with a raincover. The club has purchased three Kelty backpack raincovers for use – designated as HR-1 through HR-3. The raincover is also used to protect the backpack in case the hike is in inclement weather. A large garbage bag in many cases will satisfy this basic need, but these raincovers can provide a better, tighter fit around the pack itself.
The raincovers fit well on the club’s HB-18 (3210 cu. in.) and HB-19 (4300 cu. in.) packs with strapped gear and still had room for adjustment. They
also fit over TEHCC’s largest pack HB-21 (5740 cu. in.), but there was no play in the cinch cord.
The club has set the rental price at $1 for each trip whether short or long. While these
are intended for use with the club packs, they can also be rented to use with personal gear to give you a chance to evaluate whether you would want to invest in your own for regular outings.

Trail Maintenance Opportunity:
Konnarock Crew - Unaka Mountain Relocation
(July 5-9, July 26-30, and August 9-13)
Joe DeLoach, 423-753-7263
Three weeks of Konnarock Crew time are left this year to continue work on the long relocation between the north side of Iron Mountain Gap and near the summit of Unaka Mountain.
To take advantage of the Crew's skills, we will work on the upper elevations that
require technical construction. Some of the work can be physically challenging, but other tasks, such as lopping brush to clear the way for the digging,
are not so tough. With five weeks of Crew time this year, we hope to complete or come close to completing these upper portions. The Crew arrives on Thursday and works until Monday morning, with the full days of Friday-Sunday being the ones we target most for Club support. Volunteers who work at least five days with the Konnarock Crew will be rewarded the coveted Konnarock T-shirt. Please contact Joe Deloach (423-753-7263) if you have any questions or would like to help.
Smokies 900 Miler:
Mt. Cammerer Hike, Great Smoky Mountains
(July 21)
Debi Berry, 423-276-6557
This hike was originally scheduled to be
a loop hike, but because of the mileage involved, I believe we will make it a
shuttle hike. We can leave vehicles at the Cosby Campground area and at the
other end of the Lower Cammerer Trail at the Big Creek Ranger Station. This will
shorten our hike from 21.3 miles to approximately 10.5 miles, which should make
for a much more pleasant day. We will meet at the usual Colonial Heights
location. Bring good walking shoes or boots, a hearty lunch, and raingear.
Please contact Debi Berry at 423-276-6557 or by email at
for more information.
Special Activity and Trip Reports (Past)
2007 Damascus Hard Core

Carl Fritz reporting
For the seventh annual Damascus Hard Core on Sunday, May 20, and Monday, May 21, the hikers and club members exceeded expectations.
One hundred and twenty people, including 26 club members and 94 hikers, volunteered 1781 hours to make this traditional event very successful. On Sunday, 88 enthusiastic hikers and 24 club members worked. On Monday there were 77 hikers and 16 club members.
On both days, the majority of us dug sidehill relocations near Cherry Gap. We dug 3700 feet of sidehill trail in the two days! We were having difficulty getting blowdowns cut and pin flags set out in front of the diggers since they dug much more trail than
ever before and certainly more than we expected. The hikers painted blazes and opened two of these relocations totaling 3150 feet. Paul Benfield and a hiker crew toted in and installed two bog bridges totaling twenty feet on Monday.
“Camo,” plus a rock crew of 14 on Sunday and 17 on Monday, used picks, pulaskis, rock bars, and sledges to create a finished gravel trail of 300 feet through some of the worst rocks we have dealt with. This relocation is on the north side of Unaka Mt. and near switchback in USFS 230. They built a four-foot crib wall to get over a large sloping rock. They even installed a French drain. In addition they roughed in another 50 feet of trail.
Thanks to everyone for achieving these major trail improvements to eliminate steep and eroding sections of the AT. Both club members and hikers readily volunteered to take on major tasks. All participants received a Damascus Hard Core patch or soon will. Most everyone received specially designed t-shirts and caps donated by several hikers.
Several people deserve special mention for making this event a success.
- Bob Peoples as usual is the motivator and logistics man, plus he finds or provides housing for all the hikers. A majority stayed at Kincora Hostel. Pat Peoples not only helped with the housing but also coordinated with Baltimore Jack, Blister Sister, and Chef Paul in preparing the meal on Monday evening. ALDA donated the funds for this evening meal.
- Bruce and Mary Cunningham provided supper for everyone on Sunday evening. Mary prepared the entire meal of barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans, and fresh strawberry short cake for about 110 people.
- Tim Stewart, Jim Foster, as well as Bob, helped coordinate the signup of hikers at Damascus Trail Days.
- Mike Rice of USFS Watauga Ranger District loaned us some pulaskis and fire rakes. Mike Hupko coordinated the movement of these tools.
- Kim Peters, Garry Luttrell and Paul Worsham were prepared to transport hikers with a 15-passenger Eastman van kindly loaned by Eastman Chemical Company. Limited transporting was needed because of all the personal vehicles this year.
These TEHCC members, affiliates and guests participated this year:
Steven Banks, Steve Banks, Paul Benfield, Ken Buchanan, Pat Buchanan, Bruce Cunningham, Mary Cunningham, Carol Dunham, Dave Dunham, Bill Elderbrock, Jim Foster, Carl Fritz, Mary Jane Fritz, Faye Guinn, Howard Guinn, Mike Hupko, Kat Johnson, Garry Luttrell, Dave McMillin, Ted Mowery, Ed Oliver, Bob Peoples, Pat Peoples, Steve Perri, Kim Peters, Tim Stewart, Ben Trotter

A.T. Section Maintenance and Special Project Reports (Past)
Reporting: Jim Foster
Date: May 24, 2007
Purpose: Clean and install water bars
Location: Section 16a from Hughes Gap to Little Rock Knob
People: Jim Foster
Summary: I cleaned water bars from Hughes Gap to Little Rock Knob.
I also installed three new water bars and trimmed some annual growth from the
trail. The trail is in good shape. Need rain!Reporting:
Steve Wilson
Date: May 25, 2007
Purpose: Evaluate trail conditions in Sections 13 and 14
Location: Section 13b from Carvers Gap to Hwy 19E
People: Brian Greteman, David Hamilos, Steve Wilson
Summary: A friend from Minnesota, Brian Greteman, visited and wanted to
hike the Roan Mountain Highlands. He specifically asked to hike this
section to see the Hump Mountains, so we tied this to a maintenance scouting
hike. Brian and I cut back growth in the 13-mile section from Carvers Gap
to Hwy 19E and evaluated blowdowns and weeds. David hiked to Grassy Ridge
with us, but had to return to Carvers Gap and drive home to care for a patient
in the hospital. (David is a podiatrist in Johnson City.) The
weeds were only knee high and not a problem, probably due to the limited
rainfall. The only blowdown seen was halfway between the Stan Murray and
Over Mountain shelters, but it was an easy walk-around and therefore not a
problem. The trail is in good shape.
Reporting: Jim Foster
Date: May 26, 2007
Purpose: Examine roof on Curley Maple Gap Shelter
Location: Section 19 from Indian Grave Gap to Curley Maple Gap Shelter
People: Jim Foster
Summary: I examined and photographed the shelter roof. It's not in
the best of shape but according to a hiker at the shelter it did not leak during
a rain on Saturday. There's slight damage to the back corner from a fallen
tree.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: May 27, 2007
Purpose: Cut blowdowns
Location: Sections 9a & 9b from 321 to Hampton trailhead
People: Bob Peoples, Baltimore Jack, Fortune Cookie, Sled Dog,
Clearwater, Seagull
Summary: Bob had some willing hikers and knew there was a major blowdown
on Pond Mt. With the crosscut saw they took out five blowdowns and did
some minor clearing.
Reporting: Jim Foster
Date: May 29, 2007
Purpose: Refurbish relocation flags and measure relocation segments
Location: Section 17 from Iron Mtn. Gap to just north of Cherry Gap
Shelter
People: Ed Oliver, Jim Foster
Summary: We refurbished the flags on four relocation sections of trail
north of Cherry Gap. We also measured the relocations yet to be done.
There's a total of 3902 feet of trail yet to be constructed.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: May 29, 2007
Purpose: Repair Roan High Knob Shelter and cut blowdowns
Location: Section 15 from Toll House Gap to Carvers Gap
People: Daryel Anderson, Paul Benfield, Ken Buchanan, Bruce Cunningham,
Carl Fritz, Bob Peoples, Tim Stewart, John Thompson
Summary: We welcomed Daryel Anderson on his first maintenance outing with
us. He has worked with AMC and Mt. Rodgers previously. We had a
recent report of several blowdowns between the shelter and Carver's Gap. Only a
couple were obstacles while the rest were head high. Ken and Tim cut 28 in
total. We completed removing rocks underpinning the shelter and replaced
them with treated lumber and hardware cloth. The shelter will now be
cooler in both summer and winter. We also cemented some holes and cracks
in the logs. Unfortunately or fortunately, in the process, we uncovered a
couple serious problems. The log that supports the front corner was
completely rotten for a couple feet. A 4x4 was wedged in to hold up the
second log and we cut off the first log and replaced it with rock. We also
discovered the opposite back corner was not supported any longer. Paul
lifted that entire corner while we placed new foundation rocks. The spring
is completely dry. It was a great day to be out since it was much cooler
on Roan.
Reporting: CB Willis for the Old Timers Hiking Club
Date: May 29, 2007
Purpose: Spring maintenance
Location: Section 16b from Iron Mountain Gap to Greasy Creek Gap
People: Howard Guinn, Faye Guinn
Summary: Howard and Faye cleaned all water bars and checked the springs,
working on one of them to improve the flow. They picked up trash at the
camp sites and trailhead, and removed a banner someone had hung near the trail.
The weeds along the trail to Weedy Gap need to be cut; we will complete this
task a little later.
Reporting: CB Willis for the Old Timers Hiking Club
Date: May 31, 2007
Purpose: Freshen blazes
Location: Section 17 Across Little Bald from Iron Mt Gap almost to Cherry
Gap
People: Sandra Perry, CB Willis
Summary: We worked again on renewing blazes starting from where we left
off earlier and working almost to Cherry Gap.
Reporting: Scott VanDam
Date: June 1, 2007
Purpose: Trim trail growth; pick up trash
Location: Section 12a, Bitter End to Walnut Mountain Road
People: Scott VanDam
Summary: I inspected the trail, cut back spring overgrowth, and picked up
trash at Walnut Mtn trail crossing. I dragged two small blowdowns out of
the trail. There is no evidence of ATV abuse so far this year. I
plan to go back to reinforce the bank on a prior relo just south of Laurel Fork
crossing where heavy hiker traffic has caused some erosion. Otherwise, this
section is in good condition.
Reporting: Scott VanDam
Date: June 2, 2007
Purpose: Maintain veiwspot; improvise log bench
Location: Section 12a, about half mile south of Laurel Fork creek
People: Scott VanDam
Summary: I cut out the tops of a few trees to maintain the view of Roan
Mtn (and others) originally enjoyed when trail was first routed along the top of
a former meadow. I used a cut log to make a natural bench out of a bent
over tree, and installed some cut branches to reinforce the lower side of
heavily worn trail near Laurel Fork.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: June 4 and 5, 2007
Purpose: Clip growth
Location: Sections 10 and 11a, from Hampton trailhead to Coon Den
People: Greg Post, Tom McCord
Summary: Tom and Greg, as part of their vacation, came to relax by
helping to maintain the AT. They spent the first day clipping the growth
in Laurel Fork Gorge. They continued their vacation the 2nd day by
clipping back the growth from Dennis Cove to Coon Den.
Reporting: Dave Dunham
Date: June 6, 2007
Purpose: Routine maintenance
Location: Section 8 from Shook Branch to Watauga Dam Road
People: Dave Dunham, Carol Dunham, Ken Buchanan, Pat Buchanan
Summary: We cleared blowdowns and removed several springpoles. We
ran the weed eater the entire length and cut back multiflora rose and poison
ivy. We also cleaned the Shelter and removed trash.
Reporting: CB Willis for Howard and Faye Guinn
Date: June 6, 2007
Purpose: Summer maintenance
Location: Section 16b from Iron Mountain Gap to Weedy Gap
People: Howard Guinn, Faye Guinn, Mike Hupko, Marsha Hupko
Summary: We mowed and clipped weeds from trail, cut several small trees,
and lopped some branches.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: June 8, 2007
Purpose: Cut weeds
Location: Sections 15 and 16a, one mile north of Hughes Gap to Greasy
Creek Gap
People: Peter King, Jim Foster, Ed Oliver
Summary: Jim, Peter, and Ed cut all the weeds from Greasy Creek Gap to
Hughes Gap plus a mile north of Hughes Gap.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: June 8, 2007
Purpose: Cut weeds
Location: Sections 12c, 12d, and 13a, from Campbell Hollow to 19E areas
People: Paul Benfield, Carl Fritz, Tim Stewart
Summary: The weeds are definitely growing well. We cut north of
Campbell Hollow to first stream, then Campbell Hollow to permanent foundation in
Bishop Hollow, plus the old road down to first fence. We also cut the field
south of 19E and between 19E and Bear Branch Road. There was no obvious
ATV traffic at Campbell Hollow which is an improvement. ATV traffic at
Isaacs Cemetery, High Point, and upper Bishop Hollow was typical, but there's no
damage to trail.
Reporting: Michael Ray
Date: June 9, 2007
Purpose: Routine maintenance
Location: Section 12e from 19E to permanent stream and foundation
People: Dale and Seth Douthat, S.C. Robinette, Steve Poteat, Carl and
Michael Ray
Summary: We cut weeds with a string trimmer, clipped overgrowth, and
removed a small blowdown from the trail. We also removed two large bags of
trash from Campbell Hollow Road crossing. Thanks to whoever trimmed weeds
on each end of the section previously.
Reporting: Steve Banks
Date: June 10, 2007
Purpose: Paint blazes
Location: Section 3a from Abingdon Gap Shelter to Spring
People: Steve Banks
Summary: I painted the blazes on my adopted section and removed a few
small blowdowns. There are two blowdowns near the "Holiday Inn" and the
weeds need cutting on the entire section. I will take care of these on
future trips. The green and white AT sign south of McQueens Gap is
missing, but I have a replacement.
Reporting: Joe DeLoach
Date: June 10, 2007
Purpose: Clear blowdowns
Location: Section 15 from Cloudland Hotel site to Toll House Gap
People: Craig DeLoach, Joe DeLoach
Summary: We had previously cut limbs to provide a path through a fallen
fir tree near the highest point of the AT near Cloudland. The tree was
hanging in other trees and was in danger of falling. We used a chainsaw
and hand tools to completely remove the tree. It took longer than we
thought due to how much it was hung in the other trees. Afterwards we
walked down to Toll House Gap and cut another tree out. The short section
is clear and in good shape. Rhododendron are already in bloom at Cloudland
and on Round Bald.
Reporting: Bruce Cunningham
Date: June 12, 2007
Purpose: Routine maintenance
Location: Section 8 from Forest Service gate to U.S. 321
People: Bruce Cunningham
Summary: Trail was maintained as part of regular annual maintenance.
Reporting: CB Willis for the Old Timers Hiking Club
Date: June 14, 2007
Purpose: Clear weeds and other growth from the trail
Location: Section 17, from Iron Mt Gap to AT crossing of FS 230
People: Howard Guinn, Faye Guinn, Kent Gangshirt, Mike Hupko, Elizabeth
Dukes, Susan Peters, Debbie Mosier, Gil Derouen, Nancy Kincheloe, Carl Kincheloe,
Daryl Loyd, Jim Perry, Sandra Perry, Malcolm Wolf, Bill Mitchell, CB Willis
Summary: We had sufficient people to use three teams to complete the
weeding and clipping of obstructing growth on the entire trail, except for the
mile from the AT FS 230 crossing south to Indian Grave Gap. On June 18, we
will complete this section, including the clearing of two large trees blocking
the trail. Cherry Gap Shelter and the springs are in good condition.
We saw many through hikers and day hikers and they were all complimentary of
condition of the trail, both our sections and others. We saw evidence of
horse use in the section between Cherry Gap and Low Gap and are concerned that
the horses are causing damage to the new trail.
Reporting: Collins Chew
Date: June 14, 2007
Purpose: Mow AT on Handicap Trail and in field
Location: Section 4b, Cross Mountain and north for 0.8 miles
People: Charlotte Chew, Collins Chew
Summary: We mowed grass and did a bit of clipping along the Handicap Trail
and the trail through the field from Cross Mountain north for 0.8 miles.
Viewing the clouds below us in Shady Valley really made us appreciate getting
the AT back on the ridge.
Reporting: Waylon Jenkins
Date: June 16, 2007
Purpose: Annual maintenance
Location: Section 2, Backbone Rock Trail to Abingdon Gap Shelter
People: Waylon Jenkins, Carol Jenkins, David Powell
Summary: We started at McQueen Gap and hiked 1.1 miles to the Abingdon
Gap Shelter to reach the section. The shelter and water supply appeared to
be in good shape. We painted blazes, did light pruning, and used a gas
weeder to work on the nettles, briars, etc. The weeds were moderately
high, and it was a good time to do the weeding. We could have used a
second gas weeder to expedite the weeding. We saw three blowdowns worthy
of removal (two of 20+ inches), but none of them are particularly difficult for
hikers to get around or over. There was also a two-to-three hundred yard
section of severely degraded trail within about a mile of the Backbone Rock side
trail. This section was associated with an extended patch of nettles on a
steep bank. We marked GPS coordinates for the blowdowns and the bad
section of trail. During the day, we met two groups of human hikers.
One group consisted of two adults with 6 teenaged hikers who were beginning a
5-day, 40-mile hike. We also met two ladies who were hiking from 321 to
Damascus. On the return to the car, we encountered a bear about 20 yards
off the trail approximately a mile trail north of the shelter. The bear
(probably a yearling) quickly fled away from the trail (good bear!).
Reporting: CB Willis for the Old Timers Hiking Club
Date: June 18, 2007
Purpose: To finish the weeding and cut out blowdowns
Location: Parts of Sections 17 and 18
People: Mike Hupko, Faye Guinn, Howard Guinn, Malcolm Wolf, Bill
Mitchell, Bob Miller, CB Willis
Summary: We removed two large blowdowns, one near Little Bald Knob and
the other near Beauty Spot Gap. We also removed several smaller trees
across the trail. We weeded and lopped from FS 230 crossing to Indian
Grave Gap. Several water bars were cleaned out and one was rebuilt.
We finished blazing the trail from Iron Mt Gap to Cherry Gap. Again, there is
evidence of horses on the new trail north of Little Bald and also on the new
trail just north of Cherry Gap. The latter is a mystery as we can't
determine where the horses came onto the AT. There is really not much
damage on this section.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: June 19, 2007
Purpose: Cut weeds
Location: Section 11a, Field just south of Dennis Cove
People: Bob Peoples
Summary: Bob cut weeds in the field just south of Dennis Cove. They
were high, but somewhat thinner than normal.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: June 23, 2007
Purpose: Cut weeds and lop
Location: Section 11b from Canute Place to 1 mile north of Moreland Gap
Shelter
People: Mike Hupko, Bob Peoples
Summary: Mike and Bob cut weeds and grass at Canute Place. Then
they lopped and cut weeds to within about a mile north of Moreland Gap Shelter.
Reporting: Carl Fritz
Date: June 23, 2007
Purpose: Cut weeds and blowdown
Location: Sections 14a and 14b, from Overmountain Shelter to just south
of Stan Murray Shelter
People: Paul Benfield, Carl Fritz, Ted Mowery, Ed Oliver
Summary: We cut all the weeds between Overmountain Shelter and Stan
Murray Shelter. The weeds were only about half as high as normal.
There was a large maple blowdown about 1000 feet south of Stan Murray Shelter.
Carl used a hand saw to cut out the top which covered the trail. Most
hikers were crossing under the trunk which appeared hazardous. We saw
about 25 hikers taking advantage of the great views and weather.
Reporting: Collins Chew
Date: June 25, 2007
Purpose: Clear blowdowns and weeds
Location: Section 4a from Low Gap to Double Springs Shelter
People: Larry Miller, Collins Chew
Summary: Larry Miller cleared blowdowns and Collins Chew used a weeder to
clear nettles, greenbrier, blackberry, etc. from the AT. One large
blowdown was partly cut with several slices so it could be notched later with a
pulaski.
Reporting: Jim Foster
Date: June 26, 2007
Purpose: Clean, repair, and replace water bars
Location: Section 16a from Greasy Creek Gap north toward Clyde Smith
Shelter
People: Jim Foster, Bruce Darby
Summary: Our intent was to clean water bars, but we actually ended up
cleaning, repairing and replacing water bars. The effect of some recent
hard rains revealed several problem areas which we attempted to correct.
We didn't get all the way to the shelter, so we'll try an finish in the next
week or so.
Reporting: Jim Foster
Date: June 28, 2007
Purpose: Accompany Forest Service biologist on relocation approval
Location: Section 17, Iron Mountain Gap relocation north and south of Hwy
107
People: Jim Foster, Ed Oliver
Summary: Ed and I went with biologist Joe McGinnis and his associate John
to Iron Mtn. Gap and checked two short sections of relocation for approval.
