McQueens Knob Emergency Shelter

bulletMiles from Damascus: 11.2
bulletLocation: On Holston Mountain between Damascus and U.S. 421; elevation 3,840 feet.  The shelter is about 30 feet from the A.T.  In the Cherokee National Forest, Watauga Ranger District.
bulletConstruction: Four-sided with open doorway and dirt floor, size is 8' by 10'.  Log walls and metal roof.  Built in 1934.  The walls are not chinked; wind, rain, and snow can easily enter.

bulletMaintenance history:
bulletOct 1991: Installed rafters, laths, and new corrugated galvanized steel roof.
bulletSept 1992: Stained/sealed unpainted wood under roof.
bulletWater source: There is no spring nearby
bulletComments: This shelter was the first on Holston Mountain on the Appalachian Trail, and is one of the oldest shelters on the entire A.T.  It is not up to current A.T. shelter "standards", and is intended for emergency use only.
