Iron Mountain Shelter

bulletMiles from Damascus: 26.0.
bulletLocation: On Iron Mountain between Tenn 91 and Watauga Dam Road; elevation 4,125 feet.  The shelter is directly on the A.T.  In the Cherokee National Forest, Watauga Ranger District.
bulletConstruction:  Three-sided with open front and wooden sleeping platform.   Concrete-block walls and a metal roof.  Built in 1960 by the U.S. Forest Service.
bulletSleeps: six
bulletMaintenance history:
bulletOct 1991: Replaced rafters and laths, and installed new corrugated galvanized steel roof on front, and new heavy duty corrugated galvanized steel roof on back.  Painted shelter inside a light tan (Snickerdoodle) and outside Bahama Brown.  The top side of the roofing was painted with a rusty metal primer, the bottom side on the back was painted white.  A picnic table was installed.
bullet1992: Caulked around nails and under ridge cap.
bulletWater source: Spring located 0.2 miles south on the A.T.
