|
 | Location: On Holston Mountain between Damascus and U.S. 421; elevation 3,785 feet.
The shelter is directly on the A.T. In the Cherokee National Forest, Watauga Ranger
District. |
 | Construction: Three-sided with open front and wooden sleeping platform.
Concrete-block walls and a metal roof. Built in 1959 by the U.S. Forest Service. |
 | Sleeps: five (we know the sleeping platform is not quite level) |
 | Maintenance history:
 | 1989: Roof repaired. |
 | Nov 1992: New steel roof installed. Painted shelter inside and out. Added
picnic table. See roof construction details in Iron Mountain Shelter maintenance
history. |
 | Sept 1999: Installed padding on both ends of gutter. |
|
 | Water source: Spring located downhill in hollow 275 yards due south of shelter (behind
it) on a fairly steep blue-blazed side trail. In dry weather, you may have to go
farther down the hill to find water. |
