Hiking

Appalachian Trail
With the most famous hiking trail in the world in our backyard, it is naturally the focus of the Club.  The 2,175 mile Appalachian Trail enters northeast Tennessee from the south after leaving the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The AT runs along the Tennessee-North Carolina border up until the Big Pine Mountain area where it turns west towards Laurel Fork Gorge and ultimately enters Virginia near Damascus.  The TEHCC has been hiking the AT since the 1940s and visits it often on day, overnight and maintenance trips.  Click here to discover the Trail.

Local Trails
There are many other trails in the TEHCC's area besides the Appalachian Trail.  The northeast Tennessee, southwest Virginia and western North Carolina area is a hiker's dream.  Within 2 hours of driving is Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the northern side of Cherokee National Forest, North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest and Virginia's Washington and Jefferson National Forests, as well as, Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.  Don't forget the numerous state and local parks within minutes from the Tri-Cities that offer hundreds of miles of trails also.  Click here to find your next hike.Phyllis, Mary Ellen, Kim and Emmett

Milestones
The TEHCC recognizes three milestones: AT2175, SB6000 and S900M.  AT2175 represents hiking the entire Appalachian Trail - section hiking or thru hiking.  SB6000 or South Beyond 6000 is the peak baggers' challenge of summiting all 39 peaks in the southern Appalachians above 6000 feet.  S900M or Smokies 900 Miler represents hiking all 900 miles of trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
